What gets missed on a weight loss journey

Calories in vs calories out.

Eat less, move more.

We've all heard these oversimplified phrases, right? And while there is a thread of truth to them, there's also a lot more that goes into improving your health, whether that means weight loss, fat loss, strength building, whatever your goal may be.

So what gets missed?

Yes, nutrition and movement are core components, but are they the biggest?

In my experience, nutrition plays the largest role in ones ability to drop pounds. But there are a few things that are more important than movement that I'd rather see you using your energy towards before killing yourself at the gym!

Stress: Stress plays a huge role in our ability to lose weight and be healthy in general. When you are in a stress response, your body is producing cortisol which leads to fat gain, and your digestion is impacted which means you aren't getting all the wonderful nutrients in the food you are giving your body. In this day and age, stress is off the charts. So make sure you are incorporating stress-reducing activities into your daily routine like meditation, taking a walk, or talking to a friend.

Sleep: Yep, you really do need those 7-9 hours of sleep every night to not only be a high functioning person during your waking hours but to also allow your body proper recovery and rest time. Especially if you are very active! When you exercise, you are breaking down muscles but when you are sleeping, you are building them. A good nights sleep also has the added benefit of reducing our stress and allowing us to make better food choices and have a better mood!

Once those things are really hammered out, now you can level up to strength training, nutrient timing, and supplementation. But without having those foundational pieces in place, you may not be getting the long term results that you really want.

But above all else, consistency is the key. So make sure you find what works best for you and what you will actually STICK to.
